5 Mistakes Beginner Powerlifters Make

Focusing on Gear: As a beginner, you don’t need to worry about collecting all the cool gear you see seasoned powerlifters using. All you need is the bar and some weight to get started. Forget the shoes, belts, straps, sleeves, wraps, and everything else. You don’t need any of it to get started today.

Reliance on Google: The internet is full of great information. It is also full of total bullshit. As a newbie, it may be hard to distinguish what’s legit and what isn’t. While you can develop a good base knowledge from Google, one of the best (and safest) ways to learn how to powerlift is by hiring a coach.

Ignoring Other Movements: Its easy to get consumed by strength training but don’t forget that resistance is just once form of exercise. Cardio is still important for your overall health! Yes, you will get your heart rate up while lifting weights but not as much as a dedicated cardio session.

Lack of Patience: Strength training is a skill that takes time to build. You can’t expect to walk up to the bar and automatically break state records. Take your time, build up a strong foundation, and the rest will come.

Going Too Hard: Some beginners may find their programming to be slow or tedious, especially when they know they are lifting sub-maximally. Its easy to go off script and lift heavier than you should just because you “know you can”. But this is a sure fire way to get yourself injured and derail your training. Stick to the program, you will have an opportunity to SAFELY express all your strength.
